Content Areas: Operations

Skillss: Connecting symbols to operations

Prerequisites: Counting, One-to-One Correspondence, Numeration

Instructional Practices: Communication, Problem Solving, Reasoning

Materials Needed: 5 to 10 unifix cubes (depending upon the number the child is working on); paper sack, equation cards to fit the number the child is working on; puddle cards (see example)

Technology: Counters and Sums

Activity:

The child reaches into their bag and grabs some of the Unifix cubes. The child places the cubes in one space on the puddle card. Next, he/she reaches into the bag and gets the rest of the cubes and places them in the other space on the puddle card. The child finds an equation card that matches the problem on the puddle card.

This activity can also be used at the symbolic level. The child would record each handful on a piece of paper and then push the cubes together, count and record the total. NOTE: This activity will be appropriate for many kindergarten children in the spring.

Theme Ideas:

Use counters like pasta or cereal that fit a variety of themes.
