Grade Level: Third
Content Area: Operations and Computations
Skills: Recognize when an estimate is appropriate, Explore estimation strategies, Determine
the reasonableness results, Apply estimation in working with computation and problem
solving.
Prerequisites: Understand the term estimation
Instructional Practices: Reasoning and Connections to the Real World
Materials Needed: jar, pennies, scales, and objects to compare weight of penny and jar-
Technology: Estimation Quick Solve I
Activity:
Have a jar of pennies and ask students: How many pennies do you think are in the jar?
(Use language of estimate) How would or could we estimate without counting the
pennies? This should lead into weight of the jar and weight of a penny by using pre-weighed objects for comparison. Take information of jar weight and penny weight and
use to estimate how many pennies in jar. This involves addition or multiplication.
Theme Ideas: Can be used with Write-to-Write Form II
