Activity:
Teacher demonstrates on overhead as students do activity on their own individual
trading board. Instructions: We are going to add two numbers using colored chips. In
the top horizontal section of the trading board use colored chips to build this number
(write number on overhead) Remember to place colored chips under corresponding
section on board. Build this number on the second horizontal section of the trading
board. To see how many chips we have altogether, pull down all chips in the red
section below the double line. If more than 9, then we must trade 10 chips for one
yellow chip and place that yellow chip in the next vertical column. Next, pull down all
the yellow chips below the double line. Count them. If have more than 9, then we
must trade 10 for a blue. Continue this process until all chips have been brought below
the double line. Record answer and clear the board for the next problem.
Theme Idea: Can be introduced during first six weeks of school and continue all year.
