Activity:
Place your students in small groups and begin your lesson with one small group at a table
or on the floor. Explain that we will be adding two digit numbers and explain what that
means. Write a problem on a wipe off board and demonstrate how to work it. Students
will use the index card to cover the tens side and will then add the numbers on the ones
side. It is important to stress always adding the ones side first because it will help them
when they learn to regroup. Students may cover the ones side next and add the tens side.
Guide students through a few problems using their index cards to cover the ones side and
then the tens side.
