Eating Fractions by Bruce McMillan

Activity:

The teacher begins the activity by telling the students that they have earned some gum for good behavior. Surprisingly, the teacher only has enough gum for half the class. What should she do because it wouldn't be fair to only give half the class a stick of gum. The students will respond that she should tear the gum in half so that everyone gets an equal half. Allow students to chew their gum while the teacher reads the literature selection.
