After the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, President Barack Obama launched an effort through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to make grants available to local communities to combat youth mental health issues. The result was the birth of the Advancing Wellness And Resilience Education (AWARE) grant program.
The Anderson County School System was fortunate to be awarded one of only sixty AWARE grants in the nation. Anderson County Schools, Lauderdale County Schools, and Lawrence County Schools were the three school districts in the state of Tennessee to be awarded grant funding. Through the AWARE grant the school system has been able to provide special training to school counselors, administrators, school resource officers and other staff members to address the mental health and behavioral issues impacting Anderson County students.
