authority.

"Legal, moral, or other influence that is established through law or position."

Authority is a necessary component of any civilized society or group. Authority is valued when the figure, group, or entity in power acts with moral legitimacy and integrity. Authority which is abused, corrupt, or immoral must be challenged by responsible citizens. This understanding of authority is the basis of our democracy, which grants power to a selected few who are expected to govern the majority with integrity.

Authority is one of three core values we hope all students adopt:

Respecting / Valuing Others                        Respecting / Valuing Authority

Respecting / Valuing Self

Helping students value authority is a complex task. A variety of authorities present themselves in a child's life: parents, teachers, pastors, and politicians to name only a few. Teaching students to value authority, as with each of the other traits, involves three primary components: the cognitive, the emotional, and the behavioral.

Authority: Cognitive

Authority: Emotional

Authority: Behavioral
